15 English buyers seduced by baroque charm of the Iblean area in “Sicilia, nice to meet you”

March 9th, conclusion of the Educational Tour organized by the Regional Department for Tourism, Sport and Performance in Sicily in the framework of the inter-regional operational plan, “Cultural, natural and tourism attractions”. This three-day event hosted fifteen English professionals from the meeting industry to promote Sicily in one of the top three incoming foreign markets as a destination for events.
The initiative, organized with the help of Sicilia Convention Bureau, involved Ryanair – who offered the Stansted-Comiso flight, and the Donnafugata Golf Resort & Spa, who hosted the Tour participants.

The “Sicilia, Nice To Meet You” Educational Tour was the launch of a regional promotional campaign aimed at the MICE sector (meeting, incentive, congress and events). In the next few months, this successful initiative will migrate towards western Sicily and a new target market will be invited to explore the island’s beauty and tourist attractions.
The Educational Tour was a precious opportunity to develop synergy between the three Sicilian DMCs (destination management companies) that sponsored some of the events included in the programme, together with some other qualified tourism operators who are members of the Sicilia Convention Bureau network. From the tour around Modica in a brand new Fiat 500 vintage, to the search for Montalbano in the streets of Scicli; from the exploration of the baroque treasures in Donnafugata and Ragusa Ibla, to the many tasting sessions of excellent wines and food and Hyblean confectionery, up to and including the show cooking in the enchanting location of the Antico Convento Ibla.
The success of the Educational Tour, which involved the South Eastern part of Sicily this time” – declared Cleo Li Calzi, Regional Minister for Tourism, Sport and Performance – “is a sound basis on which to extend this type of experience to other areas of Sicily too. Promoting our territory to tour operator is, in fact, even more effective if, in addition to the hospitality facilities, the visitors are told about and have a chance to see the many local excellences that characterise our territory: from the monuments to gastronomy, from the landscape to our culture”.
Culture, history, gastronomy and entertainment are the main strands of an educational tour programme to promote Sicily on foreign markets and to attract increasing flows of tourism and MCE, by discovering the location for unexplored events.

The Educational Tour availed itself of the media partnership of the Hyblean community of Instagramers. Collaboration between Instagramers Ragusa (@Igers_Ragusa) and Sicilia Convention Bureau (@siciliacb) led to a storytelling of the event on Instagram. Laura Meecham of World Telemedia was given the “Best Shot Award” for the photographic challenge – #SiciliaToMeet – organized for this occasion.
